I chose to embroider a mask on a sort of newspaper looking background for a couple of reasons. For starters I just think it looks awesome. Secondly the mask has been a huge part of life since lockdown, especially as a freshman in college. It is definitely a new experience having to remember to grab your mask and make sure you have it everywhere you go; I’ve done my fair share of forgetting one from time to time. It also makes meeting new people a lot different, if not more challenging. It’s hard to judge how the person underneath the mask looks and in my experience the mask muffles a lot of what you say and it gets rather annoying to have to repeat yourself more than two times. The newspaper looking background was to try and include the impact that the news had on the whole pandemic. In my experience, the news was constantly on and always being watched to see the new developments, rules, and regulations that we need to follow. In my opinion, the news blew it up and caused a large panic. I also added some Covid-19 germs to the mask because over my college experience I tested for positive for Covid-19. Within the first two months of school I went back home for two weeks and was locked in my room. I missed out on a lot of experiences with the new friends that I had just made, and it made it difficult to feel comfortable coming back afterwards. My case for Covid-19 overall was mild. The first two days were the worst for me, I had a fever of 102 degrees and my throat felt as if it had swollen shut. However, after those two days I no longer felt sick other than the loss of my smell and honestly, that was the worst part. It was hard when I felt healthy and fine, but I still had to stay away from everyone and got treated like the plague, which I guess I was. So, the mask, news, and Covid-19 germs have all had an impact on my life as they have in other people’s lives so I felt that it was appropriate to include that into the new hobby that I learned over the lockdown.
